Observation of teachers by their seniors or head of departments is a form of supervision carried out in almost all schools. But in most lessons, when teachers know they will be observed they will put in their best performance – the Halo effect. In my school, all the students will give their feedback on their teachers’ lessons once a year and the average score of the teachers is a part of the performance assessment. For example, if a teacher teaches 5 classes, all the students from those classes will give feedback based on a 17 item instrument and a score computed. The average of the scores of the students from the 5 classes will form the single performance score as rated by the pupils. This way, the teachers will have to put up their best performance all the time as they are under observation, all the time throughout the year. The feedback instrument can be easily done on-line in the computer laboratory in a controlled environment, hence there is no need for the messy printing of the hard copies of the feedback instruments.
